Ka is a composer, an arranger, a conductor and a pianist, and has concentrated on combining her identity as a Korean with her religious faith as a Christian to create a new synthesis in contemporary music using contemporary musical techniques and Korean folk materials. Rhee has also brought her own style of music - bold yet metaphoric - through the unique orchestration and harmonization to express inspiration from phenomenon of nature, and her understanding of life. Her compositions and arrangements - orchestral, chamber, vocal and choral works - have been widely performed in the United States, Europe and South Korea. She received awards from several prestigious competitions including Korean New Music Festival, Seoul New Music Festival, SCI/ASCAP Commission Competition, Music09 Composition Competition and College Music Society’s Regional and International Conference, and scholarships from the Korean American Scholarship Foundation and Yonsei University. Born in Seoul, Korea, Rhee received a D.M.A. at the University of Maryland, and a M.M. and B.M. in Music Composition at Yonsei University. She studied with Lawrence Moss, Mark Wilson, Cheong Mook Kim, and Seong Hyun Yun. She currently lives in New York City with her husband and daughter.
